Bidding on the end of the world
we hid ourselves excited and embarrassed
in a bed made of metaphors
courageous cowards
and waited for a storm

We had scripted our love
for ashes to come
and in embrace, we sung the words like a lullaby
promising another the apocalypse
but spoke of nothing real

Cowardly courageous
we planned on making babies
during an impossible hour
when time would lose its reign
but we only dirtied the sheets

We came like cowards
in the brevity of a winter's night
we hoped for flames to consume us
in fear of the alternative conclusion
to a story that lacked courage.

When the sun came up,
no world lay in ashes
and courageously we retreated
each of us into our own corners of the script
losing one another in the turn of a page.
